To the solo and 2-person firms with maybe 1 admin: How many hours per week are you typically working?

Outside tax season a full forty hours most weeks and one Sunday afternoon per month doing my own books.

During tax season I am resolved to doing a maximum of 55 hours per week next season. To help facilitate that, new clients must accept going on extension.

Outside of tax season, typically average 30-40 hour weeks depending what's going on.
During tax season around 90 hour weeks.

I stick to about 40 outside of Feb-Apr and the first two weeks of Sept/Oct, but make sure I take at least six weeks of vacation.
I'm resolved to not exceed 55 in any of the other time periods, but was certainly more than that last year.

Tax Season 90 hours.

Off season 30 to 40 hours.

6 weeks of vacation

I have a very definite plan in place as to exactly when to go down to 60 hours during tax season and 25 hours during off season. I'm hoping to reach that goal in 6 years.

I suspect that in 10 years I will be down to half of that reduced amount too.

I understand that it would make more sense to stabilize and not "front load" my work plans so much, but I am afraid of AI and other legislative risks in the 10 to 15 year term. I'll take the chance that I'll be healthy enough to enjoy the reduced workload.

My numbers come from 2016 before I sold off the majority of my business and became a FT CFP advisor. I still have about 100 tax clients today.

Tax Season 55 hours.

Off season 25 to 30 hours.

4-6 weeks of vacation

At age 50, I NEVER worked a Friday from 4/16 to 12/31.

I would say , with the above, my income was in the top 10 percent of sole practitioners... at least I think so. (We were a 2 person form for the last 12 years.
