Anyone know how long a CPA in NY is required to keep workpapers?

Took over a client 2 years ago.

Asked client to get workpapers

She didn't

Now i convinced her to.

CPA says only keep records for 3 years for ex-clients.

I thought it was 6 required.

You mean the taxpayer doesn't have any records themselves?

The requirement for record retention lies with the taxpayer, not the CPA. Yes, there are guidelines and requirements for professionals to maintain records, but that isn't necessarily the issue here. The issue is that the taxpayer didn't maintain their records.
Unless....Did the CPA toss records that belonged to the client? That is a very different issue.
