Are "e signatures" acceptable to IRS for tax returns?

Yes, tax returns have been signed electronically using taxpayer PINs for many decades now.

However, I suspect what you are really asking about is completely paperless signatures on Form 8879 (correct me if I'm wrong). See Pub 1345 for requirements. I believe one allowed method involves the taxpayer using a pad of some kind in person, but it would probably be easier to just sign paper if taxpayer is present in person. Otherwise, I believe completely paperless signatures for Form 8879 require KBA (knowledge based authentication).

Also, I'm sure this topic has been exhaustively discussed in this forum in the past, but as participants come and go, it's good to get a new round of comments from time to time.

Yes, that's what I was interested in. And I was looking for "the latest" if anything had changed.
