Looking for an inventory program that can kept track of a large amount (many thousands) of items.

Client would like to be able to place a bar code on each item which would kept track of the item, its location, price, etc and make it easy to locate. Does not have to intergrade with an accounting system but client uses quickbooks pro.

Inventory is artwork - each piece is unique and no 2 items are the same

Main concern is that the item should be easy to locate

Currently it takes client a long time to locate items sold and when there is a turnover in personnel it gets impossible.

Thank you

Have you looked into QB Enterprise (or POS) systems?
The tracking part might not be available in those systems, not sure.

QB Enterprise has the most advanced inventory features available.

The most difficult variable you are likely to encounter is that each item you're looking to track is discreet.
QB would not be well suited for this. Nearly every client I have with significant inventory uses a separate system for inventory maintenance.
You might look into systems for auto dealers. Not sure if they would have the barcode scanning, but that kind of system would deal with the discrete/unique item dynamic.

You could look into Fishbowl. It can handle thousands of inventory items and specific (discrete) tracking, but where it falters is when invoices contain MANY line items. It can generate its own barcodes if UPCs are not needed. For an artist, it would probably work just fine. But, when I worked in private accounting and we were using it for invoices that had 200+ line items, the mobile devices were awful. I know they have implemented upgrades and programming changes since then. There are several major inventory/warehouse management systems that do integrate fairly well with Quickbooks Desktop, but Fishbowl is the #1 product for that purpose.

Of course, inventory tracking and locations are only as good as the setup and actual consistency in placing the items where indicated in the software. Staff or idiot warehouse managers have a tendency of moving things around without thinking.
