CAF number

How long is it taking for CAF to issue the number. A friend that is new to this just faxed a Form 8821 for a client.

I don't remember how long it took.

Some years ago, prior to the 2018 ID verification rules, it took a couple of weeks. I already had a CAF number for my private clients and I wanted a separate one for my employer's clients. I called PPS and she initiated it over the 'phone. I don't recall if she gave me the number there and then or not.

I realize any contact with the IRS at the moment is challenging. However, is it worth trying to get hold of PPS and see how far your friend can get?
