Did tons of phone reps recently retire?

Can't get through at all for individuals for practicioner priority line

and

when i call the general line; that's a nightmare wait as well

Got through last night

after hour wait

rep so so

than got disconnected in mid call

Did tons of people retire?
or

Congress has been on a mission to defund/emasculate IRS going on now for 15 years. You can't add new programs (ACA, CTC, EIC, ERC, RRC, etc. etc.), cut the budget, and expect nothing to suffer. IRS has a mandate to manage new programs, but no mandate to answer the phone. The source of the problem is Congress. The fix is with Congress.

sending a letter could take a year to get back from

what a disaster

i read the irs is hiring 4000 new people...no experience necessary.

The phone situation has been bad for years and got worse during COVID. The new hires won't be manning the phones for months (training).

Seems the last couple of weeks lots of taxpayers received notices. I guess that has spiked the number of calls. Someone that subscribes to EnQ (in another group I'm in) said their wait time was over 2 hours. You know its bad when even the "bots" can't get through!

I tried calling at 7AM 4 days in a row last week and couldn't even get put on hold. Finally told the client they needed to call themselves. I'm going to have to start only calling for my large clients. Simply not worth the time for some of the smaller ones.

Calling late in the day, after 6 PM seems to have better luck.

zl28: Why are you calling the 1040 number?
Why aren't you calling PPS (Practitioner Priority Service) at 866-860-4259? I assume you have POA for your client.
The PPS does occasionally get answered.

Oh wow! I don't believe in using services like enQ but it's been getting more and more tempting lately. I figured enQ had a lot to do with us not getting through.

Called my state a few weeks ago and the rep was obviously working from home because we had to shout over her TV in the background.
