Wanting to use IRS' FIRE site to efile 1099's for many client companies.
Need software to initially prepare 1099's and turn into ASCII files.
Any suggestions of off the shelf products to consider?
Also, does Quickbooks' do this for a company?
Thank-you!!!

CFS Tax Software has a good 1099 program. I've used it for several years. It submits the 1099s to FIRE easily.

I have been looking into e-filing 1099's as well, as it is now required for NC. However, it appears for the federal 1099s, you must first file a form 4419-Application for FIRE, which can take up to 45 days to process (probably longer with the shut-down). Am I correct that I must have this processed before I will be eligible to e-file?

Yes, you do. Upon processing your application they will assign a Transmitter Control Code to you which is required to Efile 1099 forms. Think of it as similar to your EFIN you use to Efile income tax returns.

That's what I gathered from my research. Guess I won't be e-filing the federal 1099s this year! Thanks for the confirmation!

There are many vendors who for a fee (various fee schedules available, for both large batches and small individual submissions) will efile 1099-MISC forms. They will also save your information from year to year to speed up next year's filing.

I've never understood the appeal of using FIRE unless you are a payroll-type service, but then I've never used it (since it doesn't appeal to me).
