What are some must-read online publications for tax news? How many hours a day do you spend reading and researching, that's not directly related to client work?

Ed Zollars has a great email newsletter.
I get lots of others, but that one is consistently good.

SmartBrief.com - CPA Letter Daily
Mondaq
Tax Pro Newsletters - NATP, NAEA, CSEA, Nevada Tax Network (I don't read them all but I skim for the headlines)
Spidell news flash
IRS and FTB press release (& notices, etc) email lists

A long time ago I used to get Kiplinger tax newsletter for a cheap introductory rate, but never was willing to pay the full rate. It was a good "expanded" headline service.

You can't read too much - the more the better! I recommend signing up for any email newsletters you can (most of the mid-size and larger CPA firms have regular publications), and at least read the headlines (it will take a year or two, but you'll get much better at keeping current while reading a minimal amount). Also, find another tax professional who you can bounce questions off of...I've found the best learning experiences are usually when someone asks me a tax question. Good luck!

I listen to his podcast updates each Monday morning while driving into the office.
