Lacerte generates this diagnostic:

The program doesn't automate the limitation of post-2017 net operating losses to 80% of taxable income, before taking into account any NOL deduction. You must override the amount of post 2017 NOL carryforward absorbed this year so that it does not exceed the 80% of taxable income limit....

Sure enough, Lacerte doesn't do that. I'm appalled - this limitation has been around for a while, and supposedly Lacerte is a comprehensive tax preparation software company.

Do the other software companies handle this calculation?

This is definitely a pain and something that surprises me as well. I'm curious if other platforms treat it differently.
Reminds me of 2021 and how we had to attach a pdf of Form 7203 to every return.

We moved from Lacerte to Drake a couple of years ago, so I can't recall what we had to do in Lacerte, but I have a vague recollection that this was a "known issue". Drake does handle it correctly. The way they handle it is a bit cumbersome because there is a box that you need to check which essentially pretends there is no NOL for the purposes of determining the 80% limitation amount, after checking the box you perform a tax return calculation, then come back and uncheck the box.

That is ridiculous. That is what we pay them to do. If Drake is doing this, why isn't Lacerte?

Part of why I'm real close to changing to CCH Access. I got a price that is less than Lacerte for a more robust tool.

It appears Lacerte sucks at handling NOLs in general. Michigan has a somewhat funky way of reporting them and nothing I do triggers it to be handled correctly on state returns. Fortunately all other calculations are correct, but still very annoying.

I'd move away from Lacerte if I felt a better option existed relative to my needs.

What is the dynamic that keeps Lacerte as your best option in contrast to other products?

Lacerte is the better software, but it does have quirks. Have used both software. I mean, if I could afford it, would be using GoSystem but that’s damn expensive

Just to clarify, in your opinion, are you comparing Lacerte with CCH or Drake as the better tool?

I think CCH is more robust than Lacerte, both are meaningfully more robust than Drake (but also much more costly).
