I looked through the FAQs for this, but didn't find an answer. Can you possibly add some help with the message formatting buttons, such as Quote, Code, List, List=, [*] and URL? I was trying to insert a hyperlink into a message but couldn't figure out how to do it. Thank you.

Yes sir...great point and those buttons are not too clear. I myself have to look twice at the 'list' construct, every time.

I will get this better described/documented. Most likely I will make the mouse hover-over hint on those buttons more meaningful, and add text near the buttons that says "hover mouse over for how-to".

Added to the punch list, thanks Dave.

In the meantime, if you're using the full editor with those buttons above the text area, you should also see a column to the right of the editing area that has a table of smilies, followed by a list of board settings. The first one is BBCode, and that's a live link. Click on it (or better yet, right click and open in a new tab, or whatever works for your browser) to get a long page filled with examples.

The specific answer for URL is that the target link goes inside the first set of brackets so that it might read {url=http://example.com}Example link{/url}, where I've used curly braces instead of brackets (because [noparse] doesn't seem to work; I guess phpBB is using a different version of BBcode than vBulletin).

Dave Fogel is here, that's so great! Hope you had a good tax season Dave.

On the subject of emails, is there any way to turn them off when our messages are posted? I get dozens of email alerts every day and I would like to turn off these notifications. I would rather just visit the forum to see replies.

hmmm...that's not supposed to be the default behavior. I'm not getting emails that way and if others are getting them then I need to see what is going on.

Go to your user control panel, follow the Overview->Manage Subscriptions tabs...let me know if you see yourself as subscribed to either a forum or to topics. If you are, you can unsubscribe and that will turn off the emails. If you are not subscribed to any then I have some digging to do.
