My son received a W-2 arising from a class action suit against a former employer that must have dragged on for about 10 years. The Social Security Number on the W-2 is 000000000 which, safe to say, is not his. The IRS computer is going to choke on this and besides, I calculate the additional wages have the potential of increasing his eventual Social Security benefit by as much as $1 per month if they are properly credited to his Social Security Earnings account. There is also is over $200 in withholding that he will get back. Trying to get an obscure law firm far away to do a W-2C for him and God only knows how many other employees is out of the question so what's the best way to fix it? I'm thinking do a Form 4852, Substitute W-2 with an explanation of what he has should do but I'm not sure.
