If you e-file Form 1099 and Form 1096 through the IRS Fire system, do you still need the red forms?

I suppose not since the printouts are just for record keeping purpose as the information have been electronically filed. However, the following is an excerpt from Drake Software instructions:

"1099 forms created from Live printed payroll, ATF payroll, or On the Fly can be e-filed with the IRS through the FIRE program web site (Filing Information Returns Electronically). Please note that Copy A of the 1099 and the 1096 must be printed on the red forms. These forms can be obtained for free from the IRS or they can be ordered from NELCO."

Are they saying that we still need to print the 1099 and 1096 out in red forms even if they are filed electronically? I am confused.

No. I have been e filing 1099's for years to eliminate the need to paper file the 1099 & 1096 with the IRS.
