is it possible for a w2 to really be incorrect? NJ wages are higher than fed wages and that can be expected, but correct me if i am wrong i thought nj wages can be reduced by the 401k contributions in box 12 of the w2? it doesnt seem that way and this employer does not do a wage reconciliation like most employers on the employee copy part of the W2, thank you

Are you sure it is a 401(k) and not, eg, a SIMPLE?

thats what i was wondering and i asked if it was a 401k. sometimes they dont know. but other than a 401k, then Nj wages would not be reduced. Correct?

Taxable wages for NJ will also often include Sec 125 amounts. With the lack of details on the W-2 you probably don’t have this information. The last pay stub of the year might give you enough information to reconcile properly.

You can look here https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/pd ... t/njwt.pdf and here https://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxati ... /tb39r.pdf for guidance.
