IRS announces Form 1040-X electronic filing options coming this summer; major milestone reached for electronic returns.

That's a good news. Sometimes clients filed tax return in Spring or Summer and then received late K-1 from Partnerships and I had to amended tax returns for them. I had to paper file 1040-X and State amendment. Now it is easier!

And CA 540X can already be efiled

No problem...and I wanted you to be aware that 540X's have been efile-able for a while. At least via Lacerte.

I use CCH Prosystem fx Tax. The diagnostic code 41263 says: Amended Ca tax returns are not available for electronic filing.

Interesting that Lacerte allows 504X but Prosystem FX doesn't.

Lacerte says they are updating 1040-X efiling and it will be available tomorrow.

IRS says it's available now.

I filed my first amended return, and discovered that:

Form 1040X: Direct deposit of refund is not allowed for e-file returns.

E-File of Form 1040-X for Tax Year 2019 is only allowed when 1) the original return for Tax Year 2019 was e-filed and 2) no more than 3 Form 1040-X Amended Returns have been e-filed for Tax Year 2019.

4 amended returns per taxpayer or per E-file originator?

Anyone hear about the expected processing time for the electronic amended return ? It would seem it should be substantially cut down . From 16 weeks to ???

Does anyone know what forms, if any, are sent with an e-filed 1040X? If they are not attached automatically, should I PDF them with the e-filed return in Lacerte?

IRS weekly e mail: Because the IRS continues to work through backlogs, the normal processing time of up to 16 weeks for F1040X submitted on paper also applies to the electronic Forms 1040-X.
