Client's 2018 tax return was amended. Form 1040X had been filed. Now he requested a copy of the 2018 tax return for refinancing. So what should I send to him?

(1) The original tax return and the amended tax return?

(2) Just the amended tax return?

(3) An updated Form 1040 with the corrected figures?

Please advise. Thank you in advance.

When I prepare an amended return, my software includes an updated 1040, so I would send both.

Do you mean you sent:

(1) Both the original 1040 with the errors and the updated 1040 with the corrected amounts?

or

(2) Both the updated 1040 with the corrected amounts and the 1040X?

I would just send them the updated 1040 with the corrected amounts . I don't think the mortgage institution wants or needs the amended return . You could write at the top of the first page of the 1040 "Amended" and the date

Whether one should send just the 1040-X or both the 1040-X and the updated 1040 which reflects the numbers on said 1040-X is often subject to (spirited) debate on this forum.

The instructions for the the 1040-X specify that all documentation that support the amended changes need to be attached to the 1040-X. Does that mean the updated 1040? Probably not, but I am firmly in the camp of "send the updated 1040 with the 1040-X".

I include the updated 1040, with all schedules and statements, behind the 1040-X and write *Amended Tax Return* in red sharpie that the top of the Form 1040.

I have not have any problems yet, and have filed plenty of amended tax returns (for new clients thank goodness).

I wonder what will be transmitted when 2019 tax year 1040-X is efileable soon? Just the two page 1040-X, or the 1040-X and 1040? Food for thought...

I would say just the updated (amended) 1040 because this is the equivalent to the transcript that the lender will get if they go through that route. It is also less confusing.
Please consider visiting this post where my question at the end has not been answered yet:

I'll take number 2!
