Filed a 2016 return for a client back in July (before the 15th deadline). Was claiming an ACTC refund. Turns out he mixed up his kid's social security number that he gave me, so the refund claim will be rejected.
Can I still file an amended return and have them still be eligible for the refund? The original return was technically timely filed, since it was before the 3 year refund deadline.
The IRS states "Taxpayers should file Form 1040-X to claim a refund within three years from the date they timely filed their original tax return", "Timely mailed is timely filed when a late return is a claim for refund"
So would my case still be eligible for a refund?
