Agreed. Extend/not extend under "normal" guidelines.

Or, you could mail it in now and they'll receive it in January of 2022.

Mailing a 2020 paper tax return is not a good option .At IRS website they mention that processing of paper returns is behind .

yes - move to may 15 and leave it there. Ever since 1099s were pushed back, 4/15 is ridiculous really.

Yes IRS Free file opened to today and there are at least 8 different vendors .The challenge is to find one where the state tax return is also free . The one I think is most attractive is "Free 1040 tax return "

Aye, but are Free File returns being processed or held? Surely they will not be processing Free File returns yet? If they are, they would have a lot of explaining to do.

The deadline should be 12/31. The taxes have been withheld, so what is the hurry, and all of us can have a normal life.

Postponing to give taxpayers more time to pay their extension payment is one thing, but postponing merely for the sake of more time?
What's stopping you from filing extensions?

I assume this means I cannot file Form 1040-X for 2019 until February 12?

I was able to transmit a 2019 Form 1040 to my software provider on the 15th, who told me today that it had been accepted by the IRS.
