If husband and wife make a gift contribution of $100,000 to an individual from a joint account, would there be a reason to elect to split the gifts and file the individual 709 returns together.

Could they just file the 709s separately and report each spouses half? Which would reflect the same if they elected to split the gifts.

Is the only reason to split the gifts if one spouse made the contribution? Maybe I am missing something in the instructions.
