A client of mine is having a W2 issued in their SSN from a company they have never worked for. I called the IRS to ask what to do about it and they said just look on our website, which was no help at all. Has anyone experienced this before? What should our next steps be?

No he is retired. He shouldn't be getting any kind of W2.

I've often told clients to not piss me off since I have their SS#'s and can issue a 1099 from some long dead company they can never clear.....but assuming he didn't just piss someone off, identity theft would be a concern....

Perhaps he was a member of a class receiving back pay in a settlement?

The W-2 had his correct name and SSN? So no input error.
I suggest you or he call this actual company and talk to their payroll department.
