A trust distributed assets (an IRA account) to beneficiary in 2020, but no income was distributed.

Is a Form K-1 required to be issued to the beneficiary if the distribution was an IRA account?

Talk to an atty soon. I have one of these, and the FIRST question is whether the trust needs to pay the tax on the retirement distribution or whether it can pass it out. The only time I've seen an IRA name a trust as bene. Super dupper dumb.

The tax is to be paid by the beneficiary (who is an individual) as it is an inherited IRA.

In this case, is the trust required to issue a K-1 to the individual beneficiary?

So if the bene inherited it, why is the trust distributing it? I would heed JR1 unless you already have talked with the attorney, who should be able to answer the question.

Exactly. EITHER the trust is the bene or some human is. Pick one and only one.

I thought there were certain situations where the distribution of the IRA could keep the inherited IrA status... not sure of the particulars in your situation. Was the individual recipient the decedent ‘s spouse?

See this for summary: https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-beneficiary

Another good summary: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/retirement/inherited-ira-rmd-rules/

And another on if the Trust was bene and then distributed to beneficiaries of the Trust: https://taxschool.illinois.edu/post/trust-ira-beneficiary/

I researched this earlier in the year and since it did not end up applying, promptly forgot the rules or criteria.

Keep in mind a K1 is issued for beneficiaries even if no income is distributed. But, only income distributions are reported on the K1(s), and not corpus.
