Client established a year-end 1/31/2022, so I need to get 2022 extensions out for fed and a few states (NY, NJ). Fed is easy, but how the heck are we supposed to make payments and extension payments for these other states when the software is not ready? They all have e-file mandate.

Tax years beginning in 2021 should be filed on 2021 tax forms. Is this a fiscal year from 2/1/2021 to 1/31/2022 (2021 forms) or a short year from 1/1/2022 to 1/31/2022 (2022 forms if available; otherwise use 2021 forms but modified for 2022 tax law)?

It's a short year from 1/1/2022 to 1/31/2022. So modify 2021 forms and try and paper file them?

The next fiscal year will be 02/01/2022 - 1/31/2023, are you saying that we will also be using the 2022 forms?

You should be able to efile, this is a common situation, especially for trusts and estates. If you software can't handle, the worst that can happen is that it is rejected, then file on paper.

Yes, or maybe e-file, as David noted above. I think there's nothing significant changing in federal tax law on the business tax side for 2022 (mainly just the 25% limit for C corporation donations goes back to 10%), so hopefully there won't be any modification necessary.

Yes.
