501 (c)(3) client wants to change from June to December year end going back to 12/31/21 short year (7/1/21-12/31/21).

it seems we would be late to file a 990 for 12/31/21 and qualify for the simplified procedure for a change of year end.

Any thoughts or suggestions

Thank you

At this point, Form 1128 would be late. However, Form 1128 isn't required for tax-exempt organizations that haven't changed fiscal years in the past 10 years. So I'm not sure where that puts things.

However: I bet no one filed an extension for the tax year of the exact period 7/1/2021-12/31/2021. Assuming that's the case, you're looking at a penalty of $20 per day, which is up to almost $2k by now. Therefore, you may want to suggest that they delay this change in fiscal year until the next year.
