A client had an unannounced visit from an IRS RA looking for a form 941 from 2011. He provided a business card. Client has received no prior communication requesting a 941. I've never had anything like this happen before. Doesn't pass my smell test. Anyone else?

One of my clients had that last week. Agent handed him a letter asking for 2018 944.
Client filed 941s that year.

That's odd. Did the RA leave paperwork? Is there a problem with your client's mail? Any bad history re communicating with the IRS?

Yes, he left Summary of Taxpayer Contact and letter 729. It all looks legit.

2011 ???

That is eleven years ago. How can they expect "most" clients to have that information still around.

Have others here had such a request asking for 11 year payroll tax returns before?

I'd ignore the fact that he showed up unannounced. Otherwise you'd probably waste too much time speculating. But I'd be on the lookout for other unusual aspects as the case proceeds.

Besides the unannounced visit, I must also say it sure looks odd to me that the RA is looking into an unfiled 2011 return. After all this delay I would normally expect that to have already been handled via a substitute for return.

By the way, are you sure it was an RA and not an RO?

I just got the card. It was an RO.

Had this happen to a client a couple of years ago. I thought this was a scam at first, but turned out it really was an RA looking for a missed 941.

My client thought it was a scam, too. But I verified the letter, IRS office address, and Revenue Officer's name and phone number.

I think you should call the RO and ask what else he needs and why

Another client received a visit today.
The letter wants her 2019 1040. She filed jointly with her spouse.
It also wants her 2021 1040. It's on extension.
WTH?

Is this a new thing? I have never heard of an agent just showing up at your door! How long do they have to provide the agents what they want? Do they expect it immediately, like that day?

I'm only aware of visits when it's payroll related.

Both of mine were MD. Two different Revenue Officers.
