I have a client where the taxpayer and spouse were married in 2021. Each had their own separate HSA plans and then they combined into one of the spouse's plan for July through the end of the year after they were married.

On one of the W-2's, box 12W shows $5,037 and the other W-2 shows $2,400 in box 12W. The total is $7,437, obviously over the $7,200 contribution limit for 2021.

Drake only allows for a T or S code for the 8889 input. The spouse's health plan that the other spouse and her daughter merged to was the husband's and he did not have any kids to claim before hand, but since they merged they now have a family plan and the wife's plan before was obviously a family plan with her daughter.

When I created separate 8889's and hit family plan for both of them, Drake doesn't calculate an excessive contribution for the additional $237. Is this correct? As in the one plan gets to basically start over since they got married?
