Any discussion on comparative tax rates must consider the inputs that one can deduct against the outputs before calculating the tax.

My current city is 8.9% general sales tax. That's state, county, city and local transit.

The highest I've ever lived in was Memphis, TN which was around 9.8% combined general at the time.

But, (I think): Tennessee doesn't have an income tax.

I'm aware. States without an income tax tend to have higher sales taxes and property taxes. The income has to come from somewhere.

Odd that they're wrong by so much. There are numerous locations in WA with higher rates. I'm at 10.5, which is quite common in Snohomish County, but Lynnwood and Mill Creek (right next door to me) are both at 10.6.

And the restaurants are asking for a 25% tip minimum on top of that.

There are a number of cities in the east side of the San Francisco Bay that are 10¾%.
