Reminder: This site is for tax and accounting professionals only. While we value our customers highly, this is not the place for non-professionals to ask questions about tax preparation. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is that for someone to take a position on a tax issue they really need to have a provider-client relationship with that person. There are liability issues involved that do not lend themselves to this site catering to consumer questions.

The guidelines for the TaxProTalk online discussion community are simple and meant to encourage the exchange of ideas and commentary. Please adhere to these simple rules when interacting with other members at this site. Failure to do so will result in your account being suspended, after being warned.

Only ONE registered username per member is allowed. If you are found to have registered more than one user name, your account(s) may be suspended.

  1. Avoid the use of sarcasm when posting. It never comes across the way you intended.
  2. Do not use inflammatory language. For example avoid saying things like "here we go again", or "you just don't get it, do you?" -- instead point out why you disagree with the post and offer your perspective in a constructive manner.
  3. Outright personal attacks on another member will not be tolerated and may cause your immediate suspension from this site. (*)
  4. Do not derail a discussion with unrelated commentary - like (Updated Sept 2024 since some people did not understand this clearly enough): No topics, posts or comments that mention any aspect of religion or politics.
  5. Do not reopen an old topic to ask a new question. For example, any topic more than approx two months old - if you have a related question please start a new topic. If you have an answer to an old topic that has not "settled out" with other answers, then it is acceptable to post your answer in that topic.
  6. Use meaningful topic titles. For example, a title like "Proper way to handle 1031 exchange?" is better than "Anyone know this?". We rely on topic titles for both preview efficiency and to help the search engine perform better.
  7. We have a forum for registered members where more flexibility is afforded for "off topic" discussions, however keep in mind that you are still expected to follow these guidelines in your discussions.
  8. The admin and moderators can't be aware of every post here, so if you see something - say something. Every post has a "report this post" button, a small triangle with an exclamation point. This notification is private, between you and the site admin or moderators. If you see a post that is offensive please report it.

Site moderators are identified with the tag "moderator" under their user name. Besides being active participants, they have volunteered to help keep the forums organized and to help assure that this place stays the welcoming, friendly place we want it to be.

Thank you for your support.

(*) We will adhere to the typical logical/philosophical definition of "personal attack"; this is a pretty good example. When you post a response that involves the character of the person you are directing your response to instead of the topic question or the argument itself, you've crossed the line.
