Big realtor network clients rented a venue for a client appreciation event.

Would you consider this to be a "Promotion" expense? "Meetings" expense? "Rent?"

Hmm.

Scenario 1. Targets turn up. Head honcho gets up and says “We appreciate that you have been really great clients. Agents are standing at the back ready to gently twist your arm to let us sell another property for you. Don’t forget to pick up your marketing pack as you leave, which please do quietly.”

Scenario 2. Drinks and nibbles are freely available. There is much laughter and general chit chat about (seemingly) nothing important. If guests have name badges, they come in three or four different colors. There is either a mercifully short speech by Head Honcho or, perhaps, an amusing skit that pokes fun at Head Honcho and chief lieutenants. Guests are not quiet as they leave.

Scenario 1 is a disastrous marketing event. 100% deduction that will be blunted by NOL limitation.

In Scenario 2, I’d want to see itemized invoices to correctly categorize the various expenses.

I'd want itemized receipts and would split between advertising, rent, meals, etc.
