My client lost his 2018 tax return (prepared return using desktop version TurboTax and deleted the tax return), but has his transcript from IRS. I need to amend the return. I am able to reconstruct the most of the return data, but miss the a piece of depreciation for a rental property, which is not on the tax return (the transcript has only the total). Since the depreciation will be carried over to future years, I need to know the basis, period, starting date. Does the IRS have the info via a phone call? What is the best option? Thanks.

How about obtaining an actual copy of the return using form 4506? There is a fee for the copy.

I think Kathy means form 4506 .
Would you be able to reconstruct depreciation for 2018 if you got the 2017 tax return including the related depreciation schedule ?

Yes, for the most part, but it appears there is a new, small piece of depreciation in 2018 and I am surprised that the transcript does not include the information.
